Integrated Digital Mental Health Care across Europe
The European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS) is a joint initiative of the European Commission and national funding organisations that supports research and innovation projects aimed at improving health systems across Europe.
The THCS call “Better care closer to home” focuses on strengthening primary and community health care through new models of integrated and digitally supported care.
eRECOVER is a multinational project funded within this programme. The project develops a shared digital infrastructure for coordinated mental health care, supporting regional care networks and structured end-to-end care pathways including digital therapeutics.
The consortium brings together clinical, academic and technology partners from Germany, France, Spain, Austria and Switzerland.
The project runs from 2026 to 2029 and focuses on improving care for common mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, stress-related disorders, sleep disorders and somatic symptom disorders.
By connecting digital diagnostics, therapy and coordinated care networks, eRECOVER aims to make mental health care more accessible, integrated and sustainable across Europe.
Focus on Primary & Community Care
eRECOVER focuses on primary and community care as the main entry point for mental health support. The project addresses the CORE-5 condition clusters –depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, stress-related and adjustment disorders, sleep disorders, and somatic symptom–related conditions – which together account for more than 80% of mental health presentations in primary care.
How eRECOVER works
eRECOVER is built as a two-layer digital infrastructure that connects regional care networks with structured digital care pathways. Clinical responsibility always remains with healthcare professionals.
Network layer
Supports the creation of regional mental health care networks including general practitioners, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, clinics and hospitals. A network website provides information, orientation and access to care pathways.
Care pathway layer
Provides a structured end-to-end digital care pathway through a patient app and a professional web platform, including screening, care coordination, digital therapy, progress monitoring and relapse prevention.
Together, these layers support better coordination, improved patient orientation and integrated mental health care.
About the Project
eRECOVER is a multi-country research and implementation project that develops and tests a shared digital platform for integrated mental health care in primary and community settings.
Together with patients, healthcare professionals, providers and system stakeholders, the project:
- co-designs the digital platform
- evaluates it through user-centred studies
- implements it in real-world care networks
- develops strategies for sustainable
- integration into routine care across Europe
